Tips for Applying Swarovski Flatback Crystals

Whether you’re working with hotfix or non-hotfix Swarovski flatback crystals, it’s crucial you know how to apply them correctly. Both types of flatback crystals require a slightly different application method. So, to help you get started, here you’ll discover the top tips for applying both hotfix and non-hotfix crystals.

Tips for applying hotfix Swarovski flatback crystals

If you’re using hotfix Swarovski flatback crystals, you’re going to need to heat up the glue to stick them onto your desired surface. Be aware that these types of crystals are not suitable for use on plastic, glass, waxy or leather surfaces. This is because these materials do not fully absorb the glue.

It’s best to apply the crystals with an hotfix applicator following the tips below.

  • Be sure to work on a strong, flat surface.
  • If applying to a sheer fabric, use either a Teflon sheet or piece of card between the layers of material to prevent the glue from sticking them together.
  • Hold the crystal in place with the applicator for up to 20 seconds.
  • Smaller crystals will take less time to set than larger ones.
  • Leave the crystals to set for up to 24 hours to ensure the glue has fully hardened.

It’s worth testing out the process on spare pieces of fabric until you’re confident in your ability. Whilst you can apply Swarovski hotfix crystals without an applicator, using one will make it so much easier. It also allows you to be much more precise with where you place the crystals.

Tips for applying non-hotfix Swarovski flatback crystals

Non-hotfix Swarovski flatback crystals can be applied onto practically any surface. You’ll just need to ensure you invest in a good-quality glue. The glue you’ll need will depend upon the surface you’re applying the crystals to. So, it’s a good idea to do a little research before getting started. When you’re ready to apply them, you’ll find the below tips invaluable:

  • Make sure you choose the right application tool. We highly recommend the Crystal Katana tool which you can check out here.
  • It’s a good idea to create a small cavity if gluing the crystals onto a solid surface. This enables longer-lasting results as it protects the Swarovski crystals from external stressors.

Non-hotfix Swarovski crystals are definitely easier to apply than hotfix crystals. However, before applying either type, it is advised you do as much research into the different types of glue and tools available as you can. Choosing the right tools is essential for long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing results.
