If there’s one item of clothing that can be found in everyone’s wardrobe it’s a good old pair of jeans. Whether they’re acid wash, boot cut, super skinny, or artfully ripped at the knees, jeans are a necessary fashion staple that can be styled up or down depending on the event. What’s more, proper denim is incredibly durable and long-lasting, which means if you invest in a well-fitting pair, you could still be wearing them ten years later.
Of course, there's typically a pair of jeans that gets pushed to the back of the drawer and forgotten. If you're suffering from a case of jean fatigue, think twice before taking them to the charity shop; order some Swarovski pearls, beads, or flatback crystals and you could transform that tired pair of Levis into a garment worthy of London Fashion Week.
The first thing to decide when revamping an old pair of jeans is whether you want to make alterations to the length. In preparation for the summer months, you could transform your jeans into cute cut-offs. Or, if you simply want to give your ankles some breathing room, take a few inches off the bottom (rolling them up if you want to disguise hanging threads).
If you’re feeling really adventurous, you could attempt some rips. To achieve the raw, rough look, rub the desired area with sandpaper or steel wool. After that, take a small sharp pair of scissors or a sharp knife and start making small cuts, pulling at the fabric with tweezers to fray the threads. It’s not an easy look to create, but if you pull it off it will look oh-so-stylish.
Embellished jeans can be found gracing the pages of many fashion magazines these days – and they’ve come a long way from the glitter/acid wash look of the early 2000s. In 2017, the hottest embellishment trends involve elaborate beading and patches, often in conjunction with some artful rips.
To achieve a chic but easy beaded style, order some of our Swarovski round pearls in standard and large sizes, and sew them onto the thigh area of one leg. This style of pearl bead has a spacious threading hole, which means they’re incredibly easy to sew on by hand. They also come in a variety of gorgeous colours, including cream, coral, dark lapis and jade.
For something a little more "bling", order some of our Swarovski flatback Hotfix crystals and affix them to the knee or ankle area of your jeans. This style of crystal comes with a heat-activated adhesive on the back, which means you can fix them to the fabric with an iron or hotfix applicator.
Ultimately, there are just two things to remember when jazzing up your jeans: less is more, and planning is vital! Before you start sewing or sticking, arrange your beads or crystals carefully and take a couple of photos for reference.
