How to Correctly Apply Swarovski Flatback Crystals

Ensuring you have the best quality Swarovski flatback crystals for your project is just one step to creating beautiful, bespoke products. You also need to know how to apply them correctly. It’s pointless using the best quality crystals if you aren’t using them properly. So, how do you apply Swarovski flatback crystals perfectly?

Here, you’ll discover some of the key things to remember when applying Swarovski flatback crystals to ensure you’re applying them properly.

Ensure the surface is suitable

If you are planning to use Swarovski Hotfix crystals you will want to make sure the surface you’ll be gluing the Swarovski hotfix crystals onto is actually suitable for use. You can do this via a very simple water test.

Apply a couple of water drops onto the surface or material. If the material quickly absorbs the drops, it offers good absorbency. If the water pearls off the carrier material, or if it takes a long time to be absorbed, the material offers insufficient absorbency which can impair the effectiveness of Hotfix application.

Make sure you’re using the best glue

If you are planning to glue-on Swarovski Flatback Crystals, it’s best to focus on the glue you’ll be using. It’s best to stick to a well-known brand of glue found in our store, and you’ll also need to ensure that you are using the right type of glue for the type of application you’re using. Different types of surfaces require a different type of glue, you can find our glue suitability matrix

Applying them to silver?

If you’ll be applying the Swarovski flatback crystals to silver, you may need to remove the coating before applying the crystals. A heat treatment or alkaline solution should be able to help with this. Once the coating has been removed, you can start gluing the crystals onto the silver.

As you can see, there are a few things you need to do before getting to work with your Swarovski flatback crystals. The above are some of the main factors to consider to ensure you achieve best results in all crafting endeavors.
