Essential Tips to Follow When Using Swarovski Hotfix Crystals

Our range of Swarovski hotfix crystals are extremely popular with both hobbyists and professionals. Designed to be attached to items using heat, these crystals are available in a huge choice of designs.

However, before using hotfix crystals, there are a few tips you’ll want to follow. Here, you’ll discover some of the most essential tips for using Swarovski hotfix crystals.

Choose a reliable, sturdy surface

When you’re working with Swarovski hotfix crystals, it’s extremely important to ensure you’re using a flat, stable surface.

Even if you plan to use an iron to attach a large batch of crystals, it’s important to avoid using an ironing board. These aren’t very sturdy and could collapse during application. Instead, use a solid work surface to ensure safe application.

Adjust heating times accordingly

If you’re working with different sized Swarovski hotfix crystals, you’ll need to ensure you adjust the heating times accordingly. Smaller crystals won’t take as long to heat up, so this does need to be accounted for when you’re working with an applicator.

As a general guideline, smaller crystals will take approximately 8 seconds to warm up, while larger ones will take around 12 seconds.

Don’t touch the crystals right away

Once the crystals have been applied, don’t touch them right away. They’re going to be extremely hot, and will need adequate time to cool down before they can be handled. You’ll only need to leave them for a few seconds, then you can pull them gently to double check they’ve stuck to the material.

If you find the crystal is still a little loose, re-apply the tip for a few seconds. This should melt the glue and create a stronger bond.

Leave plenty of time for the crystals to set

After you’ve completed the embellishment project, you’ll need to make sure you leave plenty of time for the crystals to set. It usually takes around 24 hours for them to set completely. You should avoid washing the material, or using it at all, for at least 24 hours.

These are some of our top tips to follow when using Swarovski hotfix crystals. It’s also important to make sure you’re using a reliable glue. Always use a well-known brand adhesive when possible.
